Program Description

The University of Utah Doctor of Physical Therapy program is ranked among the top 10% of all PT programs in the United States. Our program in physical therapy has been preparing students to be highly competent and compassionate professionals for over 50 years. We take pride in bringing together the most advanced educational philosophies and the most current research together with the finest faculty to create an effective and supportive learning environment. We treat students as professionals, requiring personal accountability.

Our program now offers three options to earn a DPT to accommodate every type of learner.

  • The Hybrid Salt Lake City option provides the unique opportunity for students to earn a DPT degree from the University of Utah without having to relocate. Didactic coursework is conducted through a layered learning model which includes engaging asynchronous content, live online sessions, and in-person immersions. Immersions take place on the Salt Lake City campus. We also leverage our rich network of clinical education sites and require 42 weeks of clinical education experiences. These are aimed to be as close to students communities as possible. Hybrid applicants are required to submit a separate PTCAS application for the Hybrid option specifically, listed under University of Utah - Hybrid Option.
  • The Salt Lake City Residential option has been established for over 50 years. Students in Salt Lake City receive didactic coursework in-person via video conferencing technology with the St. George students. Applicants can apply by indicating location choice on our PTCAS application, University of Utah - Residential Option.
  • The St. George Residential option is located on the Utah Tech University (UTU) campus. St. George offers state of the art facilities, students services provided by the University of Utah and UTU, and close proximity to several National Parks. Didactic coursework is in-person conducted via video conferencing technology with the Salt Lake City students. Applicants can apply by indicating location choice on our PTCAS application, University of Utah - Residential Option.

Admissions, prerequisites, application requirements, and curriculum for each option are identical. Visit our website for more details.

While our Residential DPT degree options are fully accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), CAPTE approval for the Hybrid Option is pending and anticipated by December 2022. The program admits 118 students each year (50 - Salt Lake City Residential, 18 - St. George Residential, and 50 - Hybrid). Courses cover 9 semesters over 3 years culminating in an entry-level Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) Degree.

Since 2008, our graduates have achieved a 99% first-time pass rate on the national license exam. Employment rates are 100% as reported by graduates actively seeking practice positions (4-year average). Full-time faculty includes ABPTS specialists, master clinicians in neurological rehabilitation, orthopedic and sports, infectious disease, burn and wound care, as well as education.

The University of Utah Physical Therapy Department houses three research laboratories: The Skeletal Muscle Exercise Research Facility, the Clinical Neuromuscular Laboratory, and the Motion Capture Core Facility. The Department is affiliated with the University of Utah Health Sciences Center, a large regional tertiary care facility. In addition, the L.S. Skaggs Wellness Center and the Balance and Mobility Clinic service the community through exercise groups for individuals with CVA, Parkinson Disease, Multiple Sclerosis, and Diabetes. The Department also has ties with Primary Children's Medical Center, Shriners' Hospital for Children, and the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

The University of Utah, founded in 1850, is a flourishing 1,500-acre campus located in the high, mountain-rimmed Salt Lake Valley. The University of Utah is classified by the Carnegie Commission as one of 151 Doctoral/Research Universities-Extensive from among 3,941 U.S. institutions.
