Program Description

The DPT program at Touro is offered at two campuses, one in New York City and one on Long Island. Faculty are experts in their fields and most are certified clinical specialists. We strive to keep class size to a maximum of 35, with small faculty to student ratios so students receive the individual attention they need and can establish relationships with the faculty. We offer an integrated curriculum designed to prepare students to meet the demands of diverse practice settings in an evolving health care environment. Coursework increases in complexity throughout the three years in the areas of foundational science (anatomy, physiology, kinesiology), clinical science (care of neurologic, musculoskeletal, cardiopulmonary, and integument disorders), behavioral science (education, administration, and development), research, and clinical practice. The curriculum combines academic and clinical coursework with an emphasis on critical inquiry and clinical problem solving. Research courses throughout the last two years of study culminate in completion of a formal academic research study, organized as group projects and mentored by faculty. Students also are required to participate in structured community and professional service as part of the curriculum.  Our program prides itself on having over 800 clinical affiliations, with many at leading hospitals and institutions in the tri state area. Students also have the opportunity to pursue clinical placements throughout the United States and to specialize on some clinicals such as dance, sports, and pelvic health.

The DPT program is a dual degree program that leads to a BS in Health Sciences and DPT degree. The majority of our students already have a bachelor's degree before they begin the program, but it is not required. Any student who has completed all 90 credits of our prerequisites may apply to the DPT program. All students earn the dual BS/DPT upon graduation.

The DPT program curriculum is designed to prepare the student to be a leader in any practice area of the physical therapy profession, including clinical practice, research, education, administration, and professional service. The curriculum continuously emphasizes the interrelationship between practical application and theory, as well as adopting a holistic  view of the patient/client as an individual. The faculty employs a variety of instructional methods: lectures, discussions, laboratory practice, simulation, clinical experiences, problem solving, collaborative learning, case based examples, and self-directed learning experiences. Competency and proficiency are determined through written and practical examinations, as well as student presentations and projects.

The faculty of Touro College Doctor of Physical Therapy Program has one of the highest number of certified clinical specialists of any program on the east coast. Students benefit from our faculty's vast and varied clinical expertise as they progress through the curriculum. Real world experience brought into the classroom truly enhances all our students' education.
