Program Description
The D.P.T. degree program provides a challenging and enriching curriculum dedicated to optimum healthcare. Through experiential learning and evidence-based practice, you’ll gain the knowledge and problem-solving skills to become a capable, well-rounded physical therapist.

Throughout the program, you will have a wide range of hands-on clinical experiences in our physical laboratory and various healthcare facilities. Our clinical specialists will work with you along the way to make sure you’re prepared to make your mark in the field of physical therapy.

We believe that you need a quality education to become an exceptional physical therapist and that’s why we’re accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). In fact, our graduates speak to that every year. Over the last few years, we’ve had incredibly high graduation rates and every one of our graduates has been employed as a physical therapist after passing their licensing exam.

The faculty for the D.P.T. program at NIU take pride in providing a high quality, professional educational experience. The faculty emphasize the development of clinical decision-making skills that are based on current best evidence, as well the development of exception manual skills and the application of therapeutic exercise principles in the examination and treatment of individuals across the lifespan. The D.P.T. program is one of only a few in the country that provides an early introduction to direct patient care, which is done through NIU's Physical Therapy Clinic.

At the NIU Physical Therapy Clinic, our licensed staff provides evaluation and treatment of acute and chronic musculoskeletal and/or neurological conditions for both NIU students and local residents. As a graduate physical therapy student, you’ll also have the opportunity to put your skills and knowledge to practice here.
