Program Description

Marquette is a Catholic and Jesuit University rooted in the heart of metropolitan Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with an enrollment of approximately 12,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Our mission is dedicated to excellence, faith, leadership and service to others including individuals of diverse and underserved populations locally and globally.

The entry-level Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT) Program at Marquette University primarily admits freshmen (i.e. Early Assurance). Marquette does accept a number of transfer students from within and outside of Marquette University to fill a limited number of available positions into the DPT professional phase. Our DPT Program is housed within the College of Health Sciences with a curriculum designed to develop the student as a generalist practitioner for ethical and effective clinical practice for patients across the age continuum. We aspire to develop students to become critical thinkers and life-long learners who contribute to and apply evidence for the restoration of function and the prevention of disease. Ranked 12th in the country by US News and World Report, 2012, the 3 year and 2 summer professional phase of the curriculum includes 30 weeks of internship from among over 600 approved clinic sites nationwide. The curriculum includes dissection of the human cadaver and opportunities for elective coursework concentrations in specialty areas of clinical practice.

Other features of our physical therapy education program include: Students who represent a wide variety of undergraduate degrees obtained with a demonstrated track record of leadership. They have been the driving force behind a Foundation for Physical Therapy premier event called the Marquette Challenge which has raised over 2.5 million dollars to support research endeavors; a distinguished faculty made up of national teaching excellence, research, and service award winners, APTA Fellows, Fulbright scholars, Board certified Specialists, master clinicians, textbook authors, and the JOSPT editor-in-chief; a commitment to cultural diversity with state and federal grants to support minority and disadvantaged students; The Marquette University Physical Therapy Neurological PT Residency Program, accredited by the APTA and co-sponsored by the Zablocki VA Medical Center; PhD and Masters degree programs in Exercise and Rehabilitation Science, partially supported by funds from the National Institutes of Health; The Marquette Sports Rehabilitation Clinic (MSRC) which provides physical therapy, athletic training and sports rehabilitation services to Marquette students, employees and their families; The Marquette ComMUnity Pro Bono PT Clinic for patients who are uninsured or under-insured; an employment record of 100% job placement the past three years within six months of passing licensure examination. A 97% graduation rate the past 3 years within the normally expected time frame; and, a 100% ultimate licensure examination pass rate.

Our Admissions Committee fills the majority, but not all, of available positions into the professional phase of our DPT Program with applicants who are currently enrolled within Marquette University and/or have taken at least 17 of the 33 pre-requisite course credits at Marquette. These internal transfer candidates would apply for consideration using the Marquette University application found on our website at:
http://www.marquette.edu/physical-therapy/documents/DPT_internal_appl.pdf whereas external candidates apply through PTCAS.

Over the past 12 years, we have averaged approximately 14 available positions to fill with transfer candidates into the DPT professional phase in a given year. During this same time frame, our transfer candidate applicant pool has ranged between 76 to 185 students.
